Perturbações do Comportamento Alimentar.
adotam comportamentos alimentares disfuncionais.
Athletes who practice combat sports, that include weight classes, present higher risk for developing eating behavior disorders. The concern to control their weight for competitions leads them to adopt dysfunctional eating behaviors. Weight changes can arise as a stressor for these athletes. In a “critical incident” logic, based on the Transactional Model of Lazarus (1999), the main objective of this study was to analyze the psychological and behavioral experience of 166 of these athletes in regard to the possibility of a specific stress situation (unwanted weight changes before a competition), in terms of primary cognitive appraisal (threat / challenge), coping and emotions, relating them to the eating behavior. Regarding main results, it is highlighted that this situation causes "a lot of stress" to the athletes; different patterns of cognitive appraisal implied differences in the remaining variables studied; larger threat perceptions were positively associated with negative emotions, such as anxiety, while more challenging perceptions were associated with positive emotions, such as joy. The dysfunctional eating behavior was explained by perceptions of threat regarding weight change; by a desire of weighing less than what they actually weighed; by denial coping and by the anxiety felt. The results suggests practical implications and a need for more research on this matter. |
