A maior
A pesquisa desenvolvida no âmbito
recurso a dados relativos à quarta vaga do projeto SHARE (Survey of Health,
Ageing and Retirement in Europe).
apoio emocional, convivência, entretenimento e apoio material e instrumental.
This study focuses on the Quality of Life of older people living alone, considered one of the most vulnerable social groups in Portugal. More specifically, we aimed to know to what extent, and how, the quality of life of individuals aged 50 and over who live alone in Portugal is related to the role played by their social networks. The main part of the literature indicates that social networks have positive effects on the well-being of the older population in general. However, networks may also have negative effects, as occurs, for instance, in the case of abuse of an older person. The research carried out in the context of this thesis provides a better knowledge about this relationship and points out additional factors which are related with the quality of life among the population under scrutiny, more specifically sociodemographic status and health condition. In addition, it contributes to our awareness of the objective conditions of life of these persons and our understanding of their social representations regarding ageing while living alone. The study was designed in an effort to triangulate quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative part of the work was carried out with recourse to data related to the fourth wave of the SHARE project (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe). As regards the networks of the persons examined, it should be emphasized that SHARE only focuses on confidant networks (networks made up of members who are confidants/considered important to respondents). From the quantitative analysis we concluded that individuals aged 50 and over living alone in Portugal distinguish themselves from their counterparts in other European countries, in that they have worse health conditions and poor educational and economic-financial resources. Regarding the research question, the analysis shows that the confidant networks of the respondents have a fundamental role in their quality of life. Concretely, individuals who are more satisfied with their network and who carry out a higher number of activities with the network have a better quality of life. A higher appreciation can be observed of the satisfaction with the network (which points at the quality of the network) and of the social activity, and a lower value is attributed to the structure and frequency of the contact. It is possible that the habituation to living alone and/or to the loss or death of members of the network, which a great part of these persons have experienced in the course of their lives, has led to this appreciation. Regarding the interviews conducted, the qualitative analysis shows that the social network is important for the quality of life, in particular for the providing of emotional support, social interaction, entertainment and material and instrumental assistance. Thus, the social networks of the major part of the respondents generate resources (social capital) which the people in question may employ to their own benefit, thus having a positive influence on their quality of life. In view of the results obtained in this study, an expansion and improvement of public policies which promote the social integration of older, alone-living persons, is considered essential. Considering the social relevance of the theme, the growth of the ageing population living alone, and the dearth of studies about the relationship between social networks and quality of life of this population, it is hoped that this research will be a contribution to the scientific knowledge about this theme. |
