dc.description.abstract | Student misbehavior in the classroom represents a serious problem with negative consequences for classroom climate. The present study intended to analyze the relationship between teachers’ efficacy beliefs (individual and collective) in handling student misbehavior and two areas commonly referred in the literature as hindered by student misbehavior: student achievement and teacher’s job satisfaction. The subjects were 1187 public school Portuguese teachers (1st to 9th grade) who answered an online survey. A canonical correlation analysis showed that the higher the teachers’ self and collective efficacy believes in handling student misbehavior, the more likely they were to report having higher achieving students and higher job satisfaction levels. Once verified the positive association between the variables of interest, a model was tested in which teacher’s self-efficacy beliefs in handling student misbehavior mediate the impact teachers’ collective efficacy beliefs have in student achievement and teachers’ job satisfaction. The results show a partial mediation effect. Possible implications for teacher’s training (in classroom and student misbehavior management) and for school leadership are discussed. | por |
