HIV/AIDS infection and suicidal ideation are considered significant public health concerns. Several studies report a higher suicide risk in HIV patients compared to the general population. The main objective of this study was to identify the factors associated with suicidal ideation in HIV patients, especially concerning the role of stigma and social support. The 94 participants were in treatment in infectology services at the hospital of Braga and Senhora de Oliveira, were mostly male (79.8%), with a mean age of 49.67 (SD = 12.32), variable between 21 and 81 years, and diagnosed with HIV there was 9.15 (SD = 7.15) years. The results showed that stigmatization, depressive symptomatology and low social support are significant predictors of suicidal ideation. These results reinforce the need for multidisciplinary interventions with HIV patients, in order to ensure a successful psychological adaptation to the disease. On the other hand, suggest the need to invest in the dissemination of information and increased knowledge about the HIV, as a chronic treatable disease, in order to reduce the levels of stigma associated with HIV. |
