A morte e a concorrência entre as confrarias de Braga (séculos XVII-XVIII)

Abstract

Neste artigo pretende-se discutir a concorrência existente entre as confrarias de Braga nos séculos XVII e XVIII, relativamente à morte e aos serviços que lhe estavam associados. Aspectos como os acompanhamentos, ter ou não tumba, ser ou não irmão, deixar esmolas e legados, e os preços pagos pelo enterramento eram essenciais para quem um dia esperava a morte. Os legados instituídos e o seu cumprimento foram também de grande relevância. Por isso, todos os que podiam inscreviam-se como confrades numa ou mais confraria, de maneira a ter um enquadramento protetor num dos momentos essenciais da sua existência: a morte. Foi em torno dela que se assistiu durante o período em análise a uma forte concorrência no mundo interconfraternal.

This paper aims to discuss the competition between religious brotherhoods of Braga, Portugal, in the 17th and 18th centuries with respect to death and the services that were associated with it. Some of those services were related to accompaniments, classification of tombs, what constituted a member, the offering of alms and endowments, and the prices paid for burial, which were essential for those who once awaited death. The instituted endowments and their attainment were also of great relevance. Therefore, those who were able, would register as confreres in one or more confraternities in order to have a protective framework for death, which was the main reason for the strong competition between brotherhoods during the period under review in this article.
