This working paper is based on a bibliographic research and discusses about gender and mental health. For example, the inequities between men and women due to gender relations have participation in the etiology of illnesses. But, in the territory of mental health, there are other dimensions on which gender relations influence. It happens that they are not always noticed. Thus, gender is also present: in psychiatric epidemiological data show that, globally, the overrepresentation women in statistics and mental health services; the diversity of diagnoses that list most common symptoms and disorders for women (such as anxiety, depression or anorexia nervosa) and men (disorders due to harmful use of psychoactive substances or antisocial disorders); in the formulation and implementation of public policies on mental health, both in official documents and in the practices of their workers; the actions of pharmaceutical companies. A gender perspective in the territory of “mental” is useful not only to recognize the differences about health, but, above all, to question the disparities and inequalities between men and women. |
