línguas maternas diferentes, tornando possível a aprendizagem além-fronteiras, dando
culturais. Knowing foreign languages, as well as the cultures of other countries, namely of those belonging to the European Union (EU), has been seen as essential for a long time. In fact, the European Commission, with the White book about Education and Training, published in 1995, recognises that it is necessary, or even essential, that every citizen in the EU should know at least two foreign languages. The Council of Europe, in 2001, published the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, whose goal is to “harmonize the teaching and learning of modern languages in great Europe.”2 One of the means which may be used by students to learn or improve a new language and culture is the learning in tandem methodology, which fosters the contact between native speakers of different languages, making it possible to learn beyond borders, giving the learner the opportunity to also learn the authentic language directly from the native speaker. (Wolff, 2002) Learning a second language implies not only getting in touch with new grammar rules and vocabulary, but also with the culture of the native people of the target language. According to William Ramos and Maria Barbosa (2009), the distinction factor between the conventional language teaching in a classroom and the learning process in tandem is that participants have the chance, in a way, to experience the other’s culture. We should also say that living in an era in which new technologies have suffered great improvements for the last few years, the communication between speakers of different countries is now easier. This project is an experiment with the learning in tandem methodology using the academic community of Instituto Politécnico do Cávado e do Ave, in Barcelos, where I am working at present. The aim was to ascertain if the participants who used this methodology had a meaningful evolution of their speaking and cultural skills or not. |
