The sunk cost effect in intimate abusive relationships

Abstract

The sunk cost effect occurs when a prior investment such as money leads to a continuous investment in a failing path of action, although a superior option is available. The main purpose of the current study is, therefore, to understand whether investments in terms of money influence people’s decision to stay or leave an abusive intimate relationship. In order to do that, participants (N = 974) were asked to read one of eight hypothetical scenarios created. These scenarios differed in terms of investment (monetary investment vs. no investment) and type of violence (physical, emotional, sexual and no violence). Then participants had to decide how much time (in days, weeks, months and/or years) they would like to invest in the relationship presented in the hypothetical scenarios. Results showed that prior monetary investment in a relationship will produce the sunk cost effect when there is no violence, and in the scenario portraying sexual violence. However, prior monetary investment in a relationship will not produce sunk cost effect when there is physical or psychological violence.

O efeito do custo irrecuperável ocorre quando um investimento prévio (e.g., monetário) numa determinada opção conduz a um investimento contínuo nessa opção, mesmo que existam opções melhores disponíveis. O principal objetivo deste estudo é compreender a influência do investimento em termos de dinheiro na decisão dos indivíduos de continuar ou terminar um relacionamento abusivo. Para isso, foi pedido aos participantes (N = 974) que lessem um dos oito cenários hipotéticos criados. Os cenários diferiram em termos do investimento (investimento de dinheiro vs. não investimento) e violência (física, psicológica, sexual e ausência de violência). De seguida, os participantes tiveram que decidir quanto tempo (em dias, semanas, meses e/ou anos) estariam dispostos a investir no relacionamento descrito no cenário hipotético. Os resultados mostram que um investimento prévio num relacionamento produz o efeito de custo irrecuperável quando há ausência de violência ou quando existe violência sexual. Contudo, um investimento prévio de dinheiro num relacionamento não produzirá o efeito do custo irrecuperável quando existe violência física ou psicológica.
