In order to explain the influence of emotion on working memory, a new component to the working memory model was proposed - the hedonic detector. This component has the ability to temporarily store and manipulate hedonic stimuli, positive or negative, from the environment and aids in decision-making of individuals. In this study it was attempted to understand the relationship between the intensity of negative emotions and the performance on working memory tasks. Participated 81 students, who performed working memory tasks under negative and neutral mood states. Two types of inductors were used - music and images - and three induction conditions - control, low arousal and high arousal. It was found that different kinds of inducers have no influence on the tasks. The induced mood did not influence the visuo-spatials working memory tasks, but the verbal tasks were affected. High arousal negative mood promoted memory in verbal tasks, while low arousal mood promoted precision on the tasks that require binding with verbal and visual information. Apparently, high arousal negative mood states increase the participant's attention, favoring performance in subsequent tasks. |
