The Portuguese prison system does not differentiate between the ethnic origin of individuals, so the criminality in Roma community is not well known. Studies about criminality of Roman woman are scarce, thus the recidivism of these women is a mystery in Portuguese society. In this sense, this research aims, is to give voice to Roma women, understanding their perception about the factors that led them to relapse, to identify risk and protective factors in the recidivism of these women and understand future perspective of these recidivist. Participated in this study seven Roma women living in the North of the Portugal aged between 23 and 48 years. The information were collected through the application of a socio-demographic and criminal legal questionnaire and a semi structured interview. These data were analysed qualitatively using the inductive Thematic Analysis under a constructivist theoretical position. The reports of this study reveal that some of recidivism causes are related to the discrimination of the majority society against this ethnic group. It was also underlined the idea of economic necessity as crime predictor and the denial of counterfeiting as a crime for these participants. |
