In this study we deal with the issue of the victimization of social work professionals, questioning about the possible impact that the recent scenario of retraction of the financing of some social policies directly related to the work of these professionals may have at the possible worsening of the episodes of violence, occasionally reported in the media. This study is based on a survey, with a sample of 330 social workers, distributed throughout the country, about their experiences with episodes of violence by clients. 20% of respondents state that they have been victims of physical aggression and 69% of verbal aggression. The most likely places to such occurrences are the workplace and the client's home. Although the study indicates the existence of aggressions in all policy areas, we conclude that the risk is higher for professionals serving on institutions that fight and treat addictions and in justice and social reintegration areas, than for those who work, for example, in elderly care institutions. From a conceptual framework that had the background of the deterioration of working conditions produced by changes in social policies, we found that the vast majority of respondents are of the opinion that these changes, in the last five years, increased the victimization risk and insecurity in the profession in general. In general, the opinions collected indicate that this profession is very similar to other traditionally considered as hazardous jobs. Finally, the study also shows that there are different views on the causes of violence: some professionals focus the problem totally on the client side; others see the professional's attitude as the cause; and there are those who, on the sidelines of this dichotomous view, place the causes of the problem on both sides (professional and client) and add them to the political and organizational level. |
