Resumo(s): | The current dissertation aimed to understand how Portuguese mothers judged the severity and
the need for intervention in different forms of child maltreatment. The impact of the
educational level on maternal beliefs and the relation of the latter with childhood
maltreatment history, religious beliefs, perceived stress and competences that mothers thought
the children should develop in early childhood were also studied. The sample was composed
by 57 mothers with children aged 0-72 months. MQS and self-report measures were used. The
latter were previously validated for the Portuguese population. Physical abuse was highlighted
as the most serious maltreatment form and with greater need for intervention. Emotional
neglect was perceived as more severe by less educated mothers than by mothers with higher
education. Negative associations were found between mothers’ beliefs concerning the severity
of emotional neglect and mothers’ expectations regarding the development of autonomy and
relational competences by children. Further investigations should design interventions that
improve the recognition, by the communities, of the damage imposed by emotional
maltreatment in the child’s trajectory. |
