ingressarem a componente predominantemente clínica.
Despite the great achievements in increased longevity, the growing relative weight of the top of the age pyramid in western societies is not taken lightly. So much so that, in fact, in 1969 Butler coins the term "ageism" to describe negative reactions to the elder population. This fenomenon is institutionalized in societies and manifests itself in several aspects of social life. The same author, in the 80's, finds ageist manifestations among medicine students, calling it medical ageism. Studies that cover this topic reveal it as a universal happening, still persisting today. Through the usage of an inductive methodology, based on data (Grounded Theory), this study means to analyze the social representations of the Minho University's medicine students on the aged population, as well as the doctor-patient relation with older patients. The technique of semistructured interview was used on 11 third grade classical period students as well as 6 alternative course medicine degree students, just before they enrol on the clinical component of the degree. After a content analysis of the interviews performed, it is concluded that the representative positioning of the interviewees is ambivalent, in the way that they display positive as well as negative social representations of the population with 65 or more years of age. On the other hand, it is also concluded that opportunity structures for interaction with grandparents or other important elders not always translates into positive representations of the elders. In this sense, the health state and levels of autonomy of grandparents or other important elders contributes to the explanation of these representations (positive as well as negative). Finally, it is concluded that the alternative course students tend to represent elders in a more positive manner than their colleagues of the classical course. This study differs from its pairs on the same subject by trying to understand the social representations of the medical students through an interactionist perspective. |
