As festas de São João em Braga: raízes, história e potencial turístico

Abstract

As Festas de São João em Braga são o maior evento do calendário anual dos bracarenses. Fenómeno de tradição e envolvimento comunitário, estas celebrações manifestam as mais autênticas características do povo minhoto, região que tem em Braga uma centralidade ancestral. Dado ser o Minho, inequivocamente, a região mais marcadamente festeira de Portugal, a tipologia de festa, cujo estudo fundamos, dá à romaria minhota o título de mais relevante celebração comunitária nacional. Sendo Braga a capital desta peculiar região, a sua principal festa, ainda hoje marcada por tradições singulares, merece um particular olhar. Este estudo iniciar-se-á com uma abordagem aos fundamentos desta celebração, cuja ancestralidade continua hoje a ser discutida, e que, no início do cristianismo, ter-se-á associado a uma das principais figuras da religião fundada por Jesus Cristo. João Batista, cuja vida e impacto naturalmente exploramos, é festejado desde tempos remotos, com diverso tipo de privilégios no ritual da Igreja Católica. Em Braga, devido à ausência de estudos aprofundados a este respeito, continuavam a sobrar muitas dúvidas. Por isso mesmo, a análise das manifestações públicas expostas ao longo de diversos períodos cronológicos permite-nos atestar, não apenas as tradições e quadros comunitários que lhe estavam associados, como também perceber as motivações da comunidade nesta particular celebração. Dividindo este estudo, fundamentalmente, em três períodos cronológicos, conseguimos elaborar uma leitura que não isenta os contextos históricos, religiosos e o ritmo da própria evolução da cidade de Braga. O aprofundamento do último século e meio das festas sanjoaninas permite-nos perceber, não apenas a sua afirmação como maiores celebrações municipais, mas também o impacto de cariz regional e nacional que alcançaram. O facto de as Festas de S. João de Braga terem sido, no passado recente, o primeiro produto turístico da cidade implica ainda uma abordagem quanto ao presente no que à atividade turística diz respeito.

John the Baptist, whose life and impact naturally explored, is celebrated since ancient times, with several kind of privileges in the ritual of the Catholic Church. In Braga, due to the absence of comprehensive studies in this respect, they still remain many questions. Therefore, the analysis of public events exposed through several chronological periods allows us to attest, not only the traditions and community cadres who were associated with him, but also understand the motivations of the community in this particular celebration. Dividing this study primarily in three chronological periods, we can produce a reading that does not exempt the historical, religious and pace from the evolution of the city of Braga. The deepening of the last century and a half parties “Sanjoaninas” allows us to understand not only its claim as the largest municipal celebrations, but also the impact of regional and national oriented reached. The fact that the Feasts of St. John in Braga have been in the recent past, the first product touristic of the city, also implies an approach for the present in relation to tourism.
