norte do País.
The Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most common neuropsychiatric disorder in childhood and one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in school children (Pondé & Freire, 2007). Some studies have shown significant rates of ADHD in obese children and adolescents, suggesting an association between ADHD and Obesity. The aim of this study is to test the association between the rate of ADHD and childhood obesity in a sample of children in the community. This study included 138 children who attend the 1st grade of basic school in the north of the country. Parents and teacher of each child completed the Revised Conners Ratting Scales (Conners, 1997; Rodrigues, 2004) for evaluations of ADHD. Parents also provided by parents, information about weight and height of the son / daughter, which allowed the calculation of Body Mass Index (BMI) of children. The results showed that obese children have an index of ADHD significantly higher compared with children with a healthy weight, indicating that obese children have an increase of ADHD characteristics in relation to children with healthy weight. |
