This study aims to describe the perceptions of a group of teachers regarding the education of students with Special Educational Needs. To that end, we used the questionnaire Teacher Perceptions Regarding the Education of Students with Special Educational Needs (Correia, 2005). It consists of items on the subject that focus on key aspects of educating students with Special Needs, like: attitudes, resources and collaboration. The data for the questionnaire were collected from 228 regular education teachers in elementary schools from the municipality of Braga. A descriptive analysis of the data showed that, although teachers agree with the conceptual basis of inclusion, they still have many doubts about the effects caused by the inclusion of students with special needs in general education. Besides, they also do not consider that they and the schools are not appropriately prepared to receive these students. They believe that special education services can make a difference in the education of students with special needs and agree with the development of a individualized education program, and also whatever curriculum adjustments and adaptations that are deemed needed. However, they argue that students with special needs require more attention than the one they can supply and that the existing resources are not sufficient to enable that the process of serving these students be a successful one. They also admit that the collaboration among all the educational providers, together with that of the parents is essential to the process, although the results show some concern considering their effective participation. The psychometric qualities of the instrument were also analyzed and the results indicated an internal consistency between α = .65 and α = .73 with the average value of α = .69 (using Cronbach's Alpha), and this value was considered reasonable (Gageiro & Pestana, 2003). In turn the factorial analysis, which used a varimax rotation, showed that the factors Attitudes, Collaboration and Resources explain 31.25% of the variance, confirming the importance given to these aspects by many of the researchers and for the most part of the organization of the questionnaire made by the author. |
