Integrated in the line of research concerning the case study, this dissertation focuses on the approach to substitution classes regarding student (de) motivation, presenting a research carried out in a basic school, headquarters of a School Group. We attempt to answer the following research question: - How the different actors (teachers, students parents and leaders) perceive substitution classes in the learning process development at the 2nd and 3rd cycle education levels and their effects on student (de) motivation, behaviour and school performance. Until the school year of 2005/2006, the school did not provide for activities in order to address the absence of a teacher during school time. Teacher absences were managed by the students, who spent the time especially with recreation and enjoying time with other students. In addition, the findings from the PISA study have placed our country in terms of educational attainment levels in a very disadvantageous position regarding other countries, which has caused the quality of public school education to be discussed publicly. Also, the public opinion highly influenced by the media has created the idea that teacher absenteeism is high. Based on a superficial analysis, it was intended to confuse teacher absenteeism with unteached classes often due to the inefficiency of the administration, since if a substitute teacher is not assigned in due time it is not considered absent, neverthless the students will not have that class. Additionally, complaints from parents and carers regarding the unteached classes happened occasionally, and the school considered this situation from a formal point of view, rather than considering its pedagogical implications. The recent amendment, provided by an order issued by the Ministery of Education, Order 17387/2005, resulted in the school addressing teacher absences during school time, which brought a new reality to which education institutions adapted differently, in particular when implementing substitution classes; it entails a change regarding the organization, method, and mainly the mentalities of both teachers and students. As far as the empirical part of this dissertation, a group of respondents corresponding to 100 students was selected for the study, which represent two education levels (2nd and 3rd cycles), allocated to five classes, one of the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th years. Information was also collected from six teachers, three of them of the 2nd cycle and three of the 3rd cycle, from the school executive council, the Director of the School Group, the president of the Parents' Association, and two mothers, as well as from consulting and analysing reports kept in the school on substitution classes. We noticed that students do not value substitution classes in general, and methodology chosen by the School Group, in particular, which they find unattractive, very routinised, and as not contributing to improve student learning. Students support more practical, more dynamic and more encouraging classes, using the new technologies and a more playful approach to teaching, and associate this practice to improved school performance. On the other hand, teachers also refer that substitution classes have no effect on improving student learning, contributing to student demotivation towards curricular classes, and consider that this measure of the Ministery of Education merely keeps students occupied, also disagreeing with the methodology implemented in the School Group. Alternatively, they support the creation of study rooms, where students may choose what to study and what school tasks to carry out with the support of teachers present, contributing to increase student productivity, and encouraging their learning. The research allows the council and teachers to acknowledge the suggestions and criticisms made by the intervenients in the educational process, and the teaching practice may benefit from this knowledge, and stimulate the students by developing other approaches: more significant and more encouraging student learning, drawing their attention and interest to understanding the school subjects rather than to their reproduction (work sheets). Also, the opinions of all the intervenients in the study regarding the report should cause the usefulness of the report to be rethought, turning it from mere red tape into a genuine instrument for monitoring substitution classes, with effects on student evaluation, and disclosing its content to those directly concerned: class Directors, students, parents and carers, and class council. |
