inventariação nacional do património geológico.
nacional/internacional.
The concern with the issues related to the Geological Heritage and Geoconservation are relatively recent. In fact, until recent time, these issues remained in oblivion, leading the geological community to invest in a strong awareness campaign in the national community in order to protect and stop the destruction of the Portuguese geological heritage. This study aimed the identification and characterization of the geological heritage in Portuguese protected areas located on the Iberian Massif and was mainly based on the published literature. The geosites were selected taking into account the scientific importance and the national/international relevance. The identified geosites were latter distributed by the geological frameworks that are being defined and developed under the scope of the national geosites inventory. Given these procedures, we select as the object of our study the following sites: the Peneda‐Gerês National Park and the Litoral Norte, Alvão, Montesinho, Douro International, Serra da Estrela, Tejo International, Vale do Guadiana, Serra S. Mamede and Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina Natural Parks. Our results indicate that the most studied Portuguese protected areas are the Peneda‐Gerês National Park and the Douro International Natural Park, both presenting the largest number of geosites inventoried according to their national/international relevance. This research has identified 62 geosites in all protected areas mentioned above. The variation of the distribution of geosites by the geological frameworks is also significant. The framework "Relief and river drainage in the Portuguese Iberian Massif” is the one with the largest number of inventoried geosites, followed by the framework "Glacial and Periglacial Geomorphology in Portugal”. |
