Resumo(s)The new Portuguese physics syllabuses advise teachers to base their teaching on their students' alternative conceptions. This article aims to describe Portuguese physics teachers' attitudes towards students' alternative conceptions on mechanics. Data were collected from 251 Portuguese physics teachers by means of a questionnaire prepared by the authors. The results of the present study seem to indicate that the teachers who have already acquired some background information about the issue of alternative conceptions are better prepared to deal with students' alternative conceptions on mechanics. Based on the results of this study, the authors argue for the need to improve teachers' knowledge and attitudes towards students' alternative conceptions so that they can put into practice the new syllabuses recommendation.
